Evelyn Coleman Dove: Celebrating Life

Evelyn Coleman Dove: Celebrating Life

October 18th is a special day for my family. It is the date that my father William Lee Dove was born in 1920. Had he lived, he would be celebrating his 105th birthday with cake and ice cream. Oh, there would be a full feast of a meal.  But all that would matter to him is the dessert. So, we all eat ice cream in his memory every year.

Some people view this life as a journey of steps we take each day as they come. Others make detailed plans for how they want their time on earth to look.  My father had a brilliant mind and was a true proponent of education for his younger siblings and for his children and grandchildren.  He would be doing headstands if he could see his gifted great grandchildren.

In 1948 he bought and developed Dove Farm on Briary Run Road and built a house himself, with selected sub-contractors.  He loved the land more than Vivian Leigh in the "Gone With The Wind" movie.  I inherited that love for the land from him. You plant something in the earth and nurture it and it grows. I prayed for a good man to take care of my father's legacy.  And, each year, I encourage my family to let's celebrate his birthday with ice cream. And remember what a great man he was as he walked on this earth moving toward his heavenly wings. Happy Birthday "My Daddy."
