Evelyn Dove Coleman: The Book I Had to Read

Evelyn Dove Coleman: The Book I Had to Read

When I was a Freshman in college, one of my professors assigned me a book to read that was not on the Curriculum List.

Now, years later, I wonder if he told me to read that book because of something he saw in me or whether he was instructing me to be like the protagonist in the book.

The name of the book was "Good Morning Miss Dove." It was written by Frances Gray Patton around the time I was born. I was happy to read the story about a stern school teacher who impacted the lives of her students for several decades. She was plain and old-fashioned but keenly smart. Her methods of teaching propelled her students to do well in their lessons and to become good adults.

The book was made into a movie by the same name.  I happened upon the television movie the other day and stopped to watch it. It brought tears to my eyes on a day that I had been feeling weary with the weight of the world. It reminded me that people are different and have varying purposes. A good teacher and mentor such as "Miss Dove" can make all the difference in a young person's life, as well as in an adult's life.
