"Harts for Hope" Campaign raise almost $20,000 for Cancer Awareness

Kinston held its first Harts for Hope campaign, hosted by Marsha Heath. The one-mile walk was held at Contentnea-Savannah K-8 School and raised just under $20,000 to support those going through gynecological cancers.

We are raising money for our community to spread awareness about gynecological cancers and support ladies and families who are going through it,” said Heath.

Marsha Heath, a survivor of ovarian cancer, was compelled to host the event after she was connected with Harts of Teal through an online support group, three months after being diagnosed.

“My goal for this walk was to raise money to get these Teal for Teachers lunch bags for my school and other schools in our county. And I think I raised enough to do it for everybody,” said Heath.

Heath, a kindergarten teacher at Contentnea-Savannah, wants the best for her community. She is advocating for people to take their health more seriously and go to the doctors for regular body checks.

“Pay attention to your body. If anything feels weird that lasts over a couple of weeks mention it to your doctor,” said Heath. “We have a lot of ladies in Lenoir County that are suffering right now because of gynecological cancers and this money that was raised will also be used to support them somehow.”

After the success she saw this year, Heath is already planning the next Harts for Hope walk, shooting for September 2024.

“Next year we will do it in September 2024. I did it in May this year because my students are so sweet and I just wanted them to be involved,” said Heath. “So that’s why we rushed it. We did this in two months and raised almost $20,000. So, imagine what we can do when I have a whole year and three months to plan.”
