Lenoir County backs ovarian cancer awareness with Harts of Hope walk
During the September 2nd Lenoir County Commissioners’ meeting, Marsha Lovick, ovarian cancer survivor, was asked to speak to the group about ovarian cancer and the upcoming Harts for Hope Cancer walk. The commissioners also signed a resolution in support of the “Harts of Hope” initiative to promote ovarian cancer awareness in our county.
The Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance is the largest global organization advancing ovarian cancer research and its supporters observe September as Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.
Ovarian Cancer is the 5th leading cause of cancer deaths in women. A woman’s lifetime risk of being diagnosed is about 1 in 78.
There is no screening tool available for ovarian cancer. Symptoms include bloating that doesn’t go away, change in bladder or bowel habits, feeling full quickly when eating, abnormal vaginal bleeding, low back or abdominal pain, feeling tired or nauseous. Any of these symptoms lasting more than 2 weeks should be evaluated by the woman’s health care provider.
Harts of Hope, a local nonprofit headed up by Marsha Heath will hold a I mile cancer walk on Saturday, Oct. 4 at Contentnea Savannah School. All the proceeds stay locally to promote ovarian cancer awareness and to comfort and care for those women diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
