Kinston Community Center adapts classes to mitigate COVID-19

The Kinston Community Center offers two types of classes, land and aqua classes. Even as the pandemic has changed how things are done, the staff at the center are doing everything in their power to provide and promote a healthy way to exercise.

“At the Kinston Community Center, we focus on all of our members,” said Facility Director Kelly Cannon. “That’s why we have all of your fitness classes included in your membership. All those classes are taught by a certified fitness instructor in that area.”

With COVID-19 precautions in place that include temperature checks upon entering the building, a face-covering requirement throughout the building, and daily closures for deep cleaning, the center wants its patrons to be safe so that they enjoy their time exercising.

“Your safety is our number one priority,” said Cannon. “We have moved all of our classes into the gymnasium so there is plenty of room to spread out with at least six feet distance from each participant. Our instructors are wearing masks and all of our classes are as safe as we can possibly have them.”

Classes are available Monday through Friday starting at 8:00 am with the latest class of the week starting at 6:30 pm. Popular land classes include Zumba, Cycling, Piloga, Line Dancing, and Cherish the Chairs. Aqua classes include Hydro Fitness, Deep Water, Aqua Tai Chi, Aqua Arthritis, and Fibro H20. There is also an option for those who cannot make the scheduled classes.

“The fitness on demand allows you to come work out when we don't have a classe. Come on upstairs in the fitness room and enjoy a great class by yourself,” said Carlos Lassiter, the assistant facility director.

With social distancing and COVID-19 precautions in place, the Kinston Community Center has their member’s health and safety as their top priority, but also their well-being.

“We build a great rapport with other members, as well as staff here,” said Lassiter. “You forget that you are working out when you are here with us. Come in and enjoy the great conversations and have a great time with each other.”
