Kinston Police Department: Tethered dog a concern, issue ongoing for several years

From Kinston Police Department

“The Kinston Police Department is aware of various social media posts made in recent days concerning the dog who is tethered at a residence along Atlantic Avenue in Kinston. As many are keenly aware, this is an issue that has been ongoing for several years. Kinston's Animal Control Officer, as well as others from our community, have worked with the owner during that time period to ensure that the dog is cared for as required by the North Carolina General Statutes and the Code of Ordinances of the City of Kinston.

“I can tell you that since the matter was brought to our attention again yesterday, Kinston Police Officers have been on the scene, physically, checking on the dog. These checks were made Wednesday, Wednesday night, and Thursday (today) and, at all times, the dog had access to a non metallic enclosure, bedding, and water. Food was present during the Wednesday night check as well. We will continue to maintain checks on the dog during this inclement whether and beyond. KPD's Animal Control Officer, in conjunction with Lenoir County's Animal Control who are assisting with this matter, will continue to monitor the situation and follow up with the owner to ensure that all legal requirements have been adhered to concerning the animal. We appreciate the input and concern from those from inside and outside of our community who have the best interest of the dog at heart.”
