The following restaurant inspections were conducted by the Lenoir County Health Department:

Waffle House

601 East New Bern Road, Kinston

Score: 93

Inspection date: 11/13

Observations:

Employee observed washing hands very quickly - must be washed for at least 20 seconds

Some food was uncovered in reach-in cooler

Dish machine as not sanitizing properly

Food in prep unit was 50F; unit was turned off for cleaning; food was discarded

Gasket on walk-in door and floor covering in walk-in is in disrepair

Shelving, carts, coffee mug trays, counter tops and grill area needs additional cleaning - repeat violation

Grease trap lids left open - close between uses

Floors need additional cleaning - repeat violation


The Mad Hatter

212 North Street, Kinston

Score: 93

Inspection date: 11/14

Observations:

Two pump containers of soap are stored adjacent to food contact surfaces - relocated

Paper towels for drying hands stored in contact with personal bag

Single-service trays reused for cooked product - may be used only one time

Ceiling vents in kitchen and restroom are dusty

Dumpster is open - shall remain closed

No certified food protection manager present

Employee touches face, shirt, etc. without washing hands

Employee does not wash hands for at least 20 seconds and touches faucet handle after washing with bare hand

No hand-drying device provided for dispenser near back door

Two Ziploc bags of food are not closed

Cheese sauce held hot at 106F - discarded; must be 135F or above


Lovick's 

320 North Herritage Street, Kinston

Score: 95.5

Inspection date: 11/14

Observations:

BBQ turkey in well was 110F - shall be reheated to 135F

Smoked sausage, dough burgers and fresh sausage were less than 135F - shall be 135F or above

Raw bacon on top of stove was 70F

Employees prepping food without hair or hairnets

Top of dish machine, outsides of equipment, shelving and inside coolers need additional cleaning - repeat violation


McDonald's 

4194 West Vernon Avenue, Kinston

Score: 96

Inspection date: 11/115

Observations:

Employee handled ready-to-eat cheese with bare hand

Fry dispenser and ice machine bin needs additional cleaning

Many flies in kitchen

Dishes stacked wet

Gasket on reach-in freezer in disrepair

Area above fries, coffee making area, outsides of equipment, shelving and bottom of reach-in freezer needs additional cleaning - repeat violation

Hand-sink beside biscuit cooler had self-closing faucet that only stays on for eight seconds - shall stay on for 15 seconds


Jin Jin Chinese Restaurant

304-B East Washington Street, La Grange

Score: 97.5

Inspection date: 11/15

Observations:

Cleaner in bottle not properly labeled

Ceiling above prep inks need additional cleaning

Hood system is greasy/dusty

Dirty wiping cloths laying on prep surface and below grill

Handles on prep unit on the right are broken and have tape on them - need to be repaired to ensure they are smooth and easily cleanable

Observations:

Raw pork store above ready-to-eat food 

Chicken stored in dry food storage closet uncovered and sauce stored on the floor

Some dishes stacked wet

Some food containers were cracked/broken with tape on them, not smooth and easily cleanable

Several areas need additional cleaning - repeat violation

Some cracked broken floor tiles

Hood system needs additional cleaning - repeat violation


Sabor Modern Latin Cuisine

108-A West North Street, Kinston

Inspection date: 11/26

Observations:

Employee entered kitchen and changed gloves without washing hands

No hand-towels at kitchen hand sink or bar hand sink

Raw chicken stored above bacon and eggs

Plates, utensils, food pans were visibly dirty - repeat violation

Some food in prep units were not date marked properly

Chicken thawing in standing water in prep sink; thawing shall be done under running water, during refrigeration or as part of the cooking process

Thermometers not calibrated correctly

Chlorine test strips could not be provided

Shelving, insides of drawers, inside/outside of equipment, utensil bins need additional cleaning

Dumpster lid is bent and broken

Dumpster doors were open


McDonald's

110 West Vernon Avenue, Kinston

Score: 94.5

Inspection date: 11/26

Observations:

Food trays, tea dispenser and fry dispenser need additional cleaning - repeat violation

Yogurt did not have proper date on it; Canadian bacon and country ham not date stamped

Wet wiping cloths laying on tables and shelves - repeat violation

Several areas need additional cleaning - repeat violation

Floors need additional cleaning, especially behind burger freezer


King's 

405 East New Bern Road, Kinston

Observations:

Raw ground beef and Whole muscle pork/beef stored above raw fish in two-door reach-in

Some dishes/utensils visibly dirty

Brisket in walk-in was 48F in the middle

Brisket was put in walk-in hot; use cooling methods to bring temperature down rapidly (ice baths, shallow pans, loosely cover or place in freezer to cool

Some dishes were stacked wet

Several rusty surfaces need to be repaired

Several areas need additional cleaning

Cracked/missing floor tiles need to be replaced - repeat violation

Observations:

Burritos reheated to 98F and folded egg to 128F - should be reheated to 135F

Cheese on prep line was 54F - should be 45f or less; food discarded

Flies in kitchen
