Katie “Sue” Tripp, 83, passed away Sunday, May 5th, 2024, at Carolina East Medical Center. She was surrounded by her family when she went home to be with Jesus. A graveside service will be held at East Duplin Memorial Park, Beulaville on Thursday, May 9, at 3PM. The family will receive friends at Edwards Funeral Home from 5 to 7 PM on Wednesday, May 8.

RALEIGH, N.C. – A Kinston man was sentenced today to 720 months in prison after shooting a Lenoir County Sheriff’s Deputy and leading law enforcement on a multi-day man hunt before shooting a neighbor and being apprehended with a loaded semi-automatic weapon with the safety set to fire. On October 16, 2023, Robert Lee Strother pled guilty to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, carjacking, and discharging a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence

Unemployment rates (not seasonally adjusted) decreased in 44 of North Carolina’s counties in March 2024, increased in 22, and remained unchanged in 34. Hyde County had the highest unemployment rate at 7.6 percent while Greene County had the lowest at 2.8 percent. Six of the state’s metro areas experienced rate increases, four decreased, and five remained unchanged.

Lenoir Community College will hold its 62nd commencement at 7 p.m. May 9 in the Student Center with Paul Sugg, president of EastPoint Prosthetics & Orthotics, Inc. headquartered in Kinston as the guest speaker. Admission to the ceremony is by ticket only as seating is limited. More than 350 graduates are eligible to receive degrees.
