Members of the KPD's Violent Crime Action Team were patrolling the area of Mitchell Wooten and observed David Fleming on the porch of a residence. They were aware Fleming had multiple warrants and was also wanted by the US Marshalls for federal probation violations.
The National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed a tornado event in Kinston. “A brief tornado embedded within a large line of severe thunderstorms briefly touched down in the eastern portion of Kinston…” NWS said in their public information statement.

During today’s storm and power outage, KPD Officers responded to a Hit & Run near the traffic circle on DR MLK JR Blvd. The offender struck and damaged personal property as he continued driving west on King St. Officers located the offender and his vehicle at the Fuel Warehouse on Hwy 70.
The suspect was identified as Joseph Wooten, 31, of Kinston. Wooten was arrested and charged with Assault by Pointing a Gun, Illegal Discharge in the City Limits, and Going Armed to the Terror of the Public.

A possible tornado touched down at a furniture store in Kinston early this afternoon
KPD Officers responded to the area of shots fired in the areas of the 200 block of E Vernon Avenue and the 600 block of Cooks Ally. A witness provided officers with an offender description and a vehicle description. As officers arrived in the area, the observed the described offender and the vehicle fleeing the area.
