Thanks to a breakout game from Thomas Saggese, who finished with three hits and two RBI, the Down East Wood Ducks defeated the Carolina Mudcats 4-3 Tuesday night to snap their six-game win streak. Tonight marks the seventh time that these two teams have faced each other and the final score was decided by two runs or fewer.
After a rain-shortened game, the Down East Wood Ducks, playing as the Kinston Indians, fell to the Fredericksburg Nationals 2-1 Saturday night. The Wood Ducks fall to 15-8 on the season but remain in first after Carolina rains out in Zebulon.
The Down East Wood Ducks, playing as the Kinston Indians defeated the Fredericksburg Nationals 6-2, Friday night at Grainger Stadium. The offense was powered by two homeruns and the pitching tallied 17 strikeouts en route to the Indians’ 15th win of the season.

After tying the game in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a Luisangel Acuña two-run homerun , the Down East Wood Ducks ran out of gas as they fell to the Fredericksburg Nationals 7-5 in ten innings on Wednesday night. The Wood Ducks have lost two straight for the first time this season since May 13th (game two) – May 14th.
The Down East Wood Ducks forgot their offense in Charleston as they fell to the Fredericksburg National 2-0, Tuesday night at Grainger Stadium. Down East tallied their first hit in the bottom of the sixth and were shut out for the first time this season.

The Wood Ducks trailed from beginning to end, only scoring two runs on five total hits. Down East looks to bounce back against the RiverDogs on Saturday with the first pitch at 6:05 p.m. The Wood Ducks will send RH Nick Krauth (0-0, 0.93) to the hill while Charleston will start RH Cole Wilcox (0-0, 2.25).
After a four-run top of the fifth, the Down East Wood Ducks (10-4) evened the series against the Charleston RiverDogs (8-6) with a 6-5 win, Wednesday night. The Wood Ducks put themselves back in the win column after losing four of their last five games entering tonight.
North Lenoir Cheerleading Coach Gail Jernigan has decided to retire after 17 years of coaching. She has left her mark on every team she has coached, but her last group of seniors will definitely hold a place in her heart.
The Down East Wood Ducks announced Thursday, along with their food and beverage partner, Delaware North, some new concession items that can be found around Grainger Stadium during the 2021 season. Fans will be pleased to see some familiar menu items as well as some exciting new additions to the concessions lineup. The new food items that fans can expect to see this year start with Kinston’s own award-winning King’s BBQ. King’s BBQ will be used for the Bang Bang BBQ sandwiches, Bang Bang BBQ nachos (loaded nachos), and the Five-Tool Tater Tots (loaded tater tots).
A book launch event for Covering All the Bases: George Whitfield’s Extraordinary Life in Baseball was held at Ellis Simon Gymnasium on Parrott Academy’s campus May 3rd. The just-released book was authored by Bethany Bradsher, a Greenville journalist and writer known for numerous North Carolina sports books including Coaching Third about ECU baseball coach Keith LeClair and The Classic about the Dixie Classic basketball tournament.

The Down East Wood Ducks will host the first-ever high school girls soccer match to take place in Historic Grainger Stadium on Friday, April 16th. The game will feature the NCISAA 3A Defending State Champions, Parrott Academy, who will take on Wilmington Christian Academy.
The girls’ and boys’ basketball teams of Rochelle Middle School finished the season as champions and co-champions of the 2021 basketball season. The shortened season finished with the girls undefeated, and the boys as co-champions with E.B. Frink Middle School.
The Kinston Lenoir County Parks and Recreation will host the 11th annual Freedom Classic today through Sunday at Historic Grainger Stadium located at 400 E. Grainger Ave in Kinston. The first pitch for the first game today (Friday) has been moved to 5:00 pm and gates will be open at 3:00 pm. The Freedom Classic will feature the Air Force Falcons versus Army Black Knights. Before Saturday’s game, F15E Strike Eagles from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base will do military flyovers. Military Appreciation and pre-game ceremonies will be held 20 minutes prior to each game.

Parrott Academy’s 2020 class of twelve Hall of Fame inductees was honored at a ceremony on February 5th. Inductees were Tiffany Barnes, Matt Beaman, Jordan Blount, Bert Bright, Jaclyn Ervin, Justin Good, Jesse Grant III, Mary Margaret Herring, Mark Keener, Preston Manning, Robert Mooring Jr., and Billy Taylor.
The Wood Ducks *have officially accepted their invitation to become the new Low-A affiliate of the *Texas Rangers after signing Major League Baseball’s Professional Development License (PDL) on Tuesday. The 10-year agreement will keep Rangers’ Low-A baseball in Kinston through the 2030 season.
