All traffic must stop for a stopped bus, unless it is on a road of four or more lanes with a median or center turning lane. In those instances, oncoming traffic does not have to stop because children will not be crossing the road to reach the bus. Traffic following a bus must always stop with the bus. If in doubt, always stop for a school bus.
Lenoir Community College recently held the dedication of the newly named Lamm Building. The building is named in recognition of William "Bill" Lamm and Melda B. Lamm, longtime supporters of the College. Their lives were dedicated to their faith, family, friends, and community. In light of that, the two were very generous with their work and donations to multiple institutions across the surrounding area.
Forecast heat index values have increased for today, and an Excessive Heat Warning has been issued for much of the area, with heat index values 110-115 F now expected.
Tundratown, a dessert shop specializing in Ice Cream Sandwich Cookies and more, is preparing to establish a presence in Kinston. Kinston High School’s media staff, The Viking Press, was recognized at the recent North Carolina Scholastic Media Association's Annual Institute, held at UNC-Chapel Hill's Hussman School of Journalism and Media.

Andrew Acheampong of Kinston was named to the Dean's List for the spring semester at University of Maryland Global Campus. To be eligible for the honor, a student must complete at least six credits during the term, earned a grade point average of at least 3.5 for the term, and maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.5 at UMGC.

The Kinston Police Department has issued a stern advisory to residents regarding the operation of unregistered all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and off-road motorcycles on city streets. The department has observed a concerning increase in the use of these vehicles in inappropriate settings, which not only endangers the operators but also poses a significant threat to bystanders and other motorists.
On Thursday, August 10, 2023, at approximately 8:13 pm, officers from the Kinston Police Department were dispatched to the 700 block of West Road in Kinston in reference to a shooting. The victim, Marquetta Norman, 35-year-old female from Greensboro, was shot in the neck by an unknown suspect.
As summer winds down, students are going back to school and legislators are getting back to business by overriding more of the Governor's vetoes and finishing up with the State Budget process. Over the last few weeks, we've been working behind-the-scenes to negotiate and build consensus with our colleagues in the NC House — and we are very close to a final product (more information follows below).
