Kinston Police teams up for the North Carolina Governor's Highway Safety Program this Labor Day

North Carolina Governors Highway Safety Program this Labor Day holiday to get impaired drivers off our roadways. Labor Day is one of the most dangerous weekends for travel behind New Year’s Eve, Christmas and St. Patrick’s Day. Over the 2019 holiday week, 10 people died and almost 600 were injured as a direct result of impaired driving in NC. Sixty-six additional lives were claimed due to speeding, distracted and sleepy driving.

Greene County confirms fifth COVID-19 death

The Greene County Department of Public Health is reporting the fifth death in the county of a resident who had tested positive for COVID-19. The individual died on Sunday. The individual was younger than 65 and it is not confirmed yet whether the individual had about underlying medical conditions.

To protect the family’s privacy, no information will be released at this time. Greene County Department of Public Health Director Joy Brock said, “I am saddened by this death and so sorry for the family’s loss. My thoughts and prayers are with this individual’s family.”

Greene Lamp awarded $2.6 million for Early Head Start Child Care Partnerships

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded Greene Lamp, Inc. two grants totaling $2.6 million for Early Head Start Child Care Partnerships (EHS-CCP) in Kinston, N.C. Congressman Greg Murphy, M.D. (NC-03) stated, “We are incredibly grateful that HHS has provided this grant in Kinston to help provide low-income families access to quality education. Under-privileged children deserve the same opportunities as their peers, and the Early Head Start projects help level the playing field.”

Pelicans' Brandon Ingram named 2019-20 Kia Most Improved Player

From the beginning of the season through March 11, Ingram averaged 24.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.0 steal in 34.3 minutes in 56 games. He was one of seven players to average at least 24.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.0 steal, joining fellow 2020 NBA All-Stars Dončić, Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks, James Harden and Russell Westbrook of the Houston Rockets, LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers and Kawhi Leonard of the LA Clippers.

Jay's 108 hoping to open in September

In July, Jay’s Restaurant Group announced the opening of their new location in downtown Kinston. Nestled between Gordon and North Street, at the former location of the Boiler Room, Jay Chin hopes to appeal to the out of town visitors to downtown Kinston, as well as the locals who call the city home.

Nowhere Bar and Grill cited by Kinston Police and Fire Departments

Nicky Rapoza of Nowhere Bar and Grill, formerly North Street Live, was cited by the Kinston Police Department for violating the governor’s executive order by operating as a nightclub. The Kinston Fire Department issued a citation to Rapoza for endangering life because his establishment does not have a sprinkler system.

Gov. Cooper is expected to announce an easing of some Covid-19 restrictions on Tuesday.

Governor Cooper announces grants to rural communities to attract 294 new jobs and more than $103 million in private investment

The North Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority (RIA) has approved 18 grant requests to local governments totaling $4,847,243, Governor Roy Cooper announced today. The requests include commitments to create a total of 590 jobs, 296 of which were previously announced. The public investment in these projects will attract more than $103 million in private investment.

LCPS, health department team up for walk-in immunization clinics

Lenoir County Public Schools is partnering with the Lenoir County Health Department to offer walk-in immunization clinics to ensure LCPS students meet state vaccination requirements for beginning the new school year. The clinics are scheduled for Aug. 31 in the Kinston High School gym lobby, Sept. 14 in the front lobby at South Lenoir High School and Sept. 21 in the front lobby at North Lenoir High School. All clinic hours are 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Southern Vinyl to grow and invest in Lenoir County

Lookout LLC recently purchased Lenoir County’s shell building at 2010 Smithfield Way with the intent to relocate Southern Vinyl Manufacturing from its current location in Kinston. “Southern Vinyl currently has 21 team members and plans to add 12 additional jobs over the next two years. The new jobs will include sales, customer service, manufacturing technicians, truck drivers and loaders,” said Ben Seegars, Member Manager of Lookout, LLC.

Lenoir County announces four fatalities related to COVID-19

According to a press release, the Lenoir County Health Department is reporting four deaths in the county of residents who had tested positive for COVID-19. This makes a total of 18 COVID-related deaths in the county since March, when the first cases were announced in the community.

Two of the patients were over 65 and two were under 65 years old and all had underlying medical conditions.
