Local moms start a Facebook group to adopt Class of 2020 Seniors

Three Lenoir County moms began a quest to recognize this year’s seniors as school shut down for the remainder of the academic year. Lori Turner Eason, Carla Williams, and Christi Collins are all senior moms. The three ladies have launched an effort to ensure that the class of 2020 in Lenoir and Greene Counties feel some sense of normalcy through gifts and encouragement from complete strangers.

State auditor releases Greene County investigative report

State Auditor Beth Wood released a Greene County investigative report with three findings:

  1. The County Manager failed to demonstrate a commitment to integrity and ethical values by requesting that a vendor alter an invoice date.

  2. The County failed to properly maintain its financial records and prepare its financial statements timely.

  3. County employees spent more than $95,000 on credit card purchases without adequate documentation

NAACP sues Lenoir County over election equipment

With the election in November on the horizon, whether Lenoir County residents will use the ExpressVote machines will be up for the courts to decide as the NC NAACP has filed suit against many counties, including Lenoir County. The current Chair of the Lenoir County Board of Elections, Courtney Patterson, is also an Executive Committee member of the NC NAACP, the organization bringing forth the lawsuit.

NWS: Marginal threat of severe weather on Thursday

According to the National Weather Service in Newport-Morehead City, “There is a Marginal Threat of Severe Weather across eastern NC on Thursday. Timing will be in the morning across the Coastal Plains, and afternoon into early evening near the Coast. Strong gusty winds, heavy rain and isolated tornadoes are possible.”

Mayor Hardy: "A curfew may be necessary at some point"

With over 50,000 deaths in the United States attributed to COVID-19, the balance between public health and personal freedom has put many governing bodies at odds with business owners and community members. According to Kinston Mayor Don Hardy, Kinston does not have the personal protective equipment (PPE), masks, or testing capabilities if the trend continues in its current rate of infection.

Governor Cooper expected to unveil reopening NC plan this afternoon

Gov. Cooper and members of the Coronavirus Task Force will hold a briefing on COVID-19 updates at 3:00 pm today. Cooper is expected to unveil his plans to phase in reopening NC. Earlier this week he said that he would also discuss schools later in the week. At 4:00 pm today, Neuse News will interview Ashley Smith, founder of the Reopen NC Facebook Group, which held a large protest in Raleigh on Tuesday.
