Hoverboard fire safety tips from North Lenoir Fire and Rescue
Last night, NLFR responded to a reported structure fire. Upon arrival, crews found a hoverboard on fire. The hoverboard was quicky removed from the home and extinguished. Thankfully, there were no injuries or serious damage reported.

Local Volunteers Go Bald to Support Childhood Cancer Research
The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, the largest non-government funder of children's cancer research grants, will host one of its signature head-shaving events at East Coast Wing and Grill at 3021 N. Heritage Street in Kinston, NC on Wednesday, September 28th from 5pm-8pm where local volunteers will shave their heads to raise money for lifesaving childhood cancer research.
Kinston Department of Fire and Rescue to participate in Child Passenger Safety Week 2022 and seat check Saturday
Kinston Department of Fire and Rescue is participating in Child Passenger Safety Week, Sept. 18 – 24, 2022, and hosting a Seat Check Event on Monday , Sept. 19, 2022 from 1:30 PM until 4:30 PM at Kinston Fire Station 1 across from the Historic Grainger Stadium. These events encourage North Carolina parents and caregivers to make sure their car seats and booster seats fit their children properly and that the seats are correctly installed in vehicles.

Suicide is among the top five leading causes of death for people ages 10 to 65 in North Carolina. To address this complex and serious health problem, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services today released a coordinated state action plan to reduce injury and death by suicide.
Another Rabid Raccoon Found in Lenoir County
On September 9, 2022, The Lenoir County Health Department received confirmation from the North Carolina State Laboratory that another raccoon has tested positive for rabies. The animal was located in Kinston between Vernon Avenue and the Neuse River west of Queen Street.

Safety remains a continued priority for school administrators and local leaders
The Student Resource Officer (SRO) at Northside High School in Jacksonville reportedly took 20 seconds to respond to events that resulted in one student dead, another injured, and one in custody. “Our heartfelt condolences are with the Onslow County School System as they mourn the loss of a student and to all parents that have experienced an act of violence in their respective communities,” said Assistant Superintendent Nicholas Harvey II. “All Lenoir County middle and high schools will have a dedicated fully staffed SRO. Each elementary school will have a shared SRO and walk throughs from NC Highway Patrol and other law enforcement agencies,” said Commissioner J. Mac Daughety.

Greene Lamp partnered with Samaritan's Feet to bring 1,600 pairs of shoes for children, adults, and seniors to Kinston as part of their Defeeting Poverty Community Resource Fair. The resource fair is being held at Grainger Stadium, in the parking lot until 1:00 pm.

On August 9, 2022, during a short ceremony at the Kinston Community Center, Females in Action (FiA) donated $1,600 to the Lenoir County Special Olympics.
