Following a joint investigation by the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, two men have been arrested for trafficking methamphetamine.

During the month of July 2023, members of the Kinston Police Department’s Investigations Division and the departments Violent Criminal Action Team were able to obtain vital information in the case. This information led detectives to obtain warrants for Ernest McCotter (31) of Hampton, VA and Deshawn Maye (30) of Kinston for the murder of Jerome Gadson on March 14th, 2021.
On July 20th, 2023, at approximately 9:00am officers with the Kinston Police Department responded to a report of an armed robbery that occurred on the 2100 block of West Rd. in Kinston N.C. Upon arrival officers met with the victim who described two subjects that had robbed him of his belongings and ran into a residence on West. Rd.
After multiple resident complaints near a La Grange residence led to a narcotics investigation, a 60-year-old woman was arrested on a controlled substance charge this week.
Officers from C-Squad initiated a traffic stop and located a concealed firearm. After an investigation, officers charged Trevon Berry (27 of Cary NC) with possession of a firearm by felon and carrying a concealed gun. Nasier Taylor (22 of Warrenton NC) was also charged with carrying a concealed gun. Both were placed in the LC Jail under secured bonds.
**UPDATE** On July 12, 2023, KPD Violet Crime Action Team received information that Retho Gardner was hiding out at a residence on the 900 block of Candlewood Dr. Gardner had 1st Degree Murder warrants for the homicide of Franklin Bowden. After an investigation, a search warrant was obtained by detectives. KPD SWAT, Patrol, and ALE assisted with the execution of the search warrant. Gardner surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody.
A narcotics investigation on Friday resulted in the arrest of a Ridgeview Drive man on marijuana and firearms charges.
A red Nissan Altima driven by Christine Marie Roe, 46, was stopped at a checkpoint on Goodman Road near Central Avenue on Saturday after LCSO deputies noted the driver possibly being under the influence of narcotics.
During the traffic stop officers observed narcotic violations and conducted a search. During the search officers located Methamphetamine and Marijuana.
On July 9th, 2023, at approximately 3:00am Kinston Police Officers were actively patrolling the area of 1610 N. Queen St. Kinston, N.C. in reference to a large gathering that had a propensity for violence. As the party began to end officers observed individuals running from the area and heard approximately 50 gunshots.
Just before 7 a.m. on July 3rd, Lenoir County EMS personnel were dispatched to a medical call at a residence on the 700 block of Garland Avenue in Kinston. Sandy Bottom Volunteer Fire Department and Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office officials also responded to the call.
On 05/28/2023 Officers with the Kinston Police Department responded to the area of Jack Rountree regarding an EMS paramedic that had been shot. The paramedic was taken to Vidant Medical Center via ground unit and escorted by KPD and LCSO.

Members of the KPD's Violent Crime Action Team were patrolling the area of Mitchell Wooten and observed David Fleming on the porch of a residence. They were aware Fleming had multiple warrants and was also wanted by the US Marshalls for federal probation violations.
During today’s storm and power outage, KPD Officers responded to a Hit & Run near the traffic circle on DR MLK JR Blvd. The offender struck and damaged personal property as he continued driving west on King St. Officers located the offender and his vehicle at the Fuel Warehouse on Hwy 70.
The suspect was identified as Joseph Wooten, 31, of Kinston. Wooten was arrested and charged with Assault by Pointing a Gun, Illegal Discharge in the City Limits, and Going Armed to the Terror of the Public.
