Case Update

During the month of July 2023, members of the Kinston Police Department’s Investigations Division and the departments Violent Criminal Action Team were able to obtain vital information in the case.  This information led detectives to obtain warrants for Ernest McCotter (31) of Hampton, VA and Deshawn Maye (30) of Kinston for the murder of Jerome Gadson on March 14th, 2021.

On July 20th, 2023, members of the Kinston Police Department, NC SBI Violent Criminal Apprehension Team, and members of the Virginia State Police were able to take McCotter and Maye into custody without incident.  Both suspects were arrested in the Hampton VA area and jailed there pending extradition back to Kinston.  This arrest would not have been possible without cooperation from the community and without the support of the District Attorney’s Office, District 8A.
