Eight local high schools will compete at the second annual Lenoir Community College high school volleyball tournament in memory of Jessica Ramsey. Games will start at 9 a.m. August 14 on the Coach Bobby Dawson Court in the LCC Student Center.
A desire to return to North Carolina has brought Todd Clark, Lenoir Community College’s first ever women’s soccer head coach, home. LCC is adding women’s soccer to its athletic line up for the 2021-2022 with plans to field a team coached by Clark in the fall of 2022.
Varsity athletic competition will resume next month for LCPS high schools as the district brings its sports calendar in line with North Carolina High School Athletic Association recommendations, flipping some fall and winter sports seasons as a precaution during the coronavirus pandemic.
“You all have been waiting patiently for a decision from the NCHSAA relative to an amended sport calendar for the 2020-2021 academic year. Please keep in mind that these proposed dates are dependent on COVID-19 conditions improving across NC. However, last night the Board of Directors approved a framework we believe maximizes the opportunities for students in our membership to participate in athletics at some point during this school year, regardless of what plan is a school and/or school system operates.”
“At his press conference on Wednesday, August 5, 2020, Governor Roy Cooper and his health team extended Phase Two of the state’s reopening plan until at least September 11. Unfortunately, this announcement means that the start of sports for the 2020-2021 school year will be delayed beyond September 1 for NCHSAA member schools.”
Patrick Holmes, LCPS Public Information, Officer said, “Athletics are suspended indefinitely as a result of plans to reopen school with virtual instruction and related current guidance from NCHSAA.”
In keeping with Governor Roy Cooper’s announcement today that the public schools of North Carolina will be closed to in-person learning for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year, the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) has canceled all remaining winter championships and spring sports.
