"It is with deep concern and disappointment that I confirm a former officer of the Kinston Police Department has been arrested by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation in connection with an alleged theft. This matter is now under active investigation by the SBI, and we are fully cooperating with their efforts.
The Kinston Police Department has partnered with a local volunteer to assist with cold case investigations, an initiative that Chief Keith Goyette hopes will bring renewed attention to unsolved crimes.
On January 7, 2025, prior to 3:00 pm, officers from the Kinston Police Department were dispatched to a residence on the 600 block of Terminal Street in reference to a disturbance. As a result of the investigation, a suspect was arrested.
The Kinston Police Department is on the lookout for individuals eager to serve and protect their community, as it announces a hiring event set to take place on Tuesday, February 27, 2024. The event will run from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm, inviting prospective candidates to the Kinston Police Department headquarters situated at 205 E. King Street.

During todays Lenoir County Commissioner’s Meeting, the Lenoir County Commissioners voted unanimously to accept the resignation of Commissioner Chad Rouse. Immediately following the meeting, the clerk to the board published the notice for the special meeting.

In Kinston, homicides have doubled this year over last. The Kinston Police Department has a high success rate in apprehending the perpetrators of crime in the city, in part because of Crime Stoppers. Concern for the safety of Kinston was the public sentiment at the city council meeting on Tuesday. After the public comments, Council members Chris Suggs and Felicia Solomon revisited a tabled agenda item on a town hall type discussion with the community to address concerns about recent crime.
Concerned citizens met on Saturday at Pearson Park to discuss recent vandalism and the overall safety of Kinston. Local businesses and decorations at Pearson Park have been damaged, reportedly by juveniles. After discussing the incidents of vandalism, the group cleaned up the damaged property in Pearson Park.
The City of Kinston is looking for its third police chief since 2020, and they may not have to look far.
In October, former Kinston Police Chief Jenee Spencer retired and left a vacancy. Major Keith Goyette was asked to step into the role as interim chief until the position could be filled. City manager Rhonda Barwick has started a nationwide search for Kinston’s next police chief.
