Neuse News visits Greene Central to talk career opportunities

SNOW HILL, N.C. (9/26/23) – Bright and early Tuesday morning, Mrs. Lewis’s yearbook class and Mrs. Scott’s career management class were visited by the Neuse News team to speak to students about career opportunities in business and journalism.

The team included publisher BJ Murphy, writer Kristy Kelly, sports writer Trey Scott, and videographer Danny Perez.

Murphy and his team spoke about the story of Neuse News and how it came to be what it is today, as well as their paths to their current careers. They discussed the different types of jobs available at Neuse News, the skills and education needed to be successful, and the challenges and rewards of the job. They also shared their own experiences working at Neuse News and offered advice to students about their future careers.

Sophomore Jayce Russell said, “I enjoyed them telling us about how they got to where they are now. I found it very interesting because you would never think about what they had to go through to get to where they are now.”

The presentation was well-received by students, and many of them asked questions about business and journalism, such as details about what it takes to get into the field and the most difficult things for them to cover in the news. The team took the time to answer all of the students' questions and provided them with helpful advice.

“I like knowing about people’s lives. It inspires me to do better. I like how Mr. Scott said that he was giving back to Greene Central with Neuse News Sports. I want to do something like that,”  said sophomore Kenyana Speight.

Senior Karisma Hardison listens to the Neuse News presentation.

The presentation was also attended by the head of Greene Central’s English Department, Mrs. Sarah Gray. Gray said, “I love that they blended solid life advice with the inside scoop on the ins and outs of how Neuse News works. I think they gave our students a lot of good life information and tied it back to a career focus, which is always important when thinking about teaching the whole child.”
