Evelyn Dove Coleman: The Convict Show
In an episode of the original Matlock tv show, Ben has lost an old case. But he has a chance to help his former client Les Matthews again, if he will let him. The client is angry because in the case Ben lost, Matthews had maintained his innocence of killing his partner. He served a 7-year sentence. Finally, this client came up for parole, and he was granted it due to his exemplary behavior while in prison. He didn't belong there.
Just before his parole went through, another convict tried to murder him, but he overcame him in self-defense. Matthews gave Ben another opportunity to defend him in this second trial. Ben's investigation showed him that Matthews had two partners in a successful business. The three had served together in the Vietnam War. The third partner named Bundy had been brought into the company by Matthews.
It turned out that Bundy had been stealing money from the company and killed the first partner when the theft was discovered. Then, Bundy set up the partner who gave him a chance to join the company for the murder of the first partner. There is so much more to the show that I won't go into, in case you want to find it and watch it. It is brilliant, though, the way Ben shows that when you give a greedy person a chance to live well, it will never be enough.
