Evelyn Dove Coleman: Summer Safety
Summer is here. For some, it is their favorite season. Vacations are planned. The best fruit is available for fiber-rich light meals. Swimming pools and beaches are open for refreshing fun in the sun. Schools are closed to give teachers and students time to rest up for the upcoming school year's work.
In all activities during the summer, safety needs to be the focus. The news outlets regularly report about things such as swimming tragedies, boating accidents and water skiing incidents. In the summer sun, it is important to wear sun screen and coverings to prevent skin cancer. It is critical to remember that the heat is high in vehicles too, so don't leave children or pets in them.
Travel is busy this time of year. Be safe. Plan to leave early and follow the rules of the road. Each time I hear there's a crash on the highways, I wonder what could have prevented it. Would following the speed limit signs help? Would keeping a safe distance between vehicles make the roadways safer? Let's all commit to be safe rather than sorry this summer season.
