Evelyn Dove Coleman: Health-Evoking Friends

Evelyn Dove Coleman: Health-Evoking Friends

When someone shows you who they are, believe them. Normally, what is on the inside of a person will somehow reveal itself.  We just have to pay attention. We cannot rule out little hints of a person's true character. My mother used to say, "If you squeeze a lemon, lemon will come out."  In other words, don't squeeze a pineapple or a pear and expect to get a cup full of grape juice. Popeye said I yam what I yam.

I used to be known to give people a second chance to do the right thing. "Even a bad wind can change direction," I would say. I had heard someone say that one time, and it stuck with me.  But the longer I have lived, the more I believe that winds blow hardest in one direction. And, people can be good or they can behave badly. Put them in different environments with different opportunities, and they are still who they are at the core.

Life is short. Smart people choose to surround themselves with others who bring brightness to their lives, not stress or drama. Socializing is good for our health. Communication and laughter with like-minded friends and family creates fertile ground for endorphins to flourish. This is a good season for tail-gating or hosting a backyard cookout with healthy foods and health-evoking people.
