Evelyn Dove Coleman: Happy Mother's Day
Happy Mother's Day!
As I listened to several friends discuss their plans for Mother's Day celebrations, it struck me how varied they were. Plans ranged from dining in fancy restaurants to outdoor extended family cookouts. One involved a surprise. She didn't know where her children were taking her for brunch because her son told her they didn't want her to know in advance. She wondered, "How will I know what to wear?" I knew she would have on a new dress. She buys one for every occasion.
Another friend described how she would prepare all of her daughter's favorites. That is their annual tradition. Mama cooks. She did lament that she had failed to teach her child to cook even a basic meal like spaghetti. What's to teach? Open box of noodles. Place in boiling water for six minutes til tender. Some like it with butter and parsley flakes. Others use the traditional tomato-based sauce. Complement it with a side salad and voila--meal!
Despite their distinctive plans, each mother shared an abiding theme of love for their families. A bond is formed between a mother and the child she raises that brings about a lifetime of caring. No matter their age, you will want them to wear hats and gloves in winter and to be careful around bodies of water in summer. You will want their hearts to be happy in all seasons.
I hope all mothers and mother-figures are showered with attention and affection this holiday. I am sending out a heartfelt "Happy Mother's Day!" to all.
