Evelyn Dove Coleman: Memorial Day Weekend Has A Purpose

Observing the Memorial Day Weekend has a somber purpose. It is set aside to honor the memory of those in military branches who died while in service to our country. It is a weekend to remember the cost of freedom for the United States of America.

Some people wear the poppy as a sign of remembrance.  Others visit veterans cemeteries and help the American Legion place flags on all the graves. Many fly their flags at half mast. Even more hold cookouts or take trips to the beach to commemorate Memorial Day as also the official start of Summer.

I am from a military family. All three of my brothers served. Many of my uncles and cousins served. I served. No one returns home exactly the same after all that is experienced. But some never return home at all.  Those who die while serving our country make the ultimate sacrifice. Let us remember them during Memorial Day Weekend, and find our unique ways to honor those who served and died.
