Evelyn Dove Coleman: Business Mentorship
I read an interesting article recently which helps to explain the differences between three types of business executives. Some are managers. Some are leaders. Others become mentors. The link to the article is: https://businessleadershiptoday.com/leader-vs-manager/
The word Mentor originates from Homerโs epic The Odyssey where Odysseus leaves his son Telemachus in the care of a trusted older friend named Mentor. Mentor serves as a wise adviser and guide. Odysseus' long journey home to Ithaca after the Trojan war is peppered with challenges and focuses on perseverance.
Companies with purposeful and productive work cultures where leaders demonstrate a mentor mindset inspire their employees and are not losing their top talent. They persevere. There are critical differences between the two fundamental leadership roles --manager and leader--and the one essential leadership role --mentor.
A manager manages the day-to-day work processes in an organization and is typically focused on results. A leader is more focused on motivating team members to achieve the company vision. Mentors take leadership to the next level and help their individual team members develop and reach their full potential.
