Evelyn Dove Coleman: Sweating Out A Fever

Evelyn Dove Coleman: Sweating Out A Fever

My mother used to say that once you get rid of a fever, then your body can heal.  She would give me the Tussin liquid medicine prescribed by Dr. Andrew Best, rub Vick's Vapo Rub on my chest and under my feet. Then, she would bundle me up with a blanket and let me sleep. When I woke up, she would throw my damp pajamas and bed things into the washing machine to wash that fever away.

Something about picturing my fever being drawn out of my body and then being washed away with that soapy laundering had a healing effect. It made me feel like I could do something about what was happening to me.  Then the delicious flavorful chicken soup that followed felt like a reward. My mother made homemade soup with chunks of cooked chicken, cut up carrots, chopped celery, and parsley. Today I still use a medicine called Quaifenesin, the decongestant salve, and a version of chicken soup with parsley flakes and Tumeric added.

During the winter flu season, it is a good idea to dress appropriately with layers, coats, hats, and gloves.  And it is smart to wash your hands with soapy warm water frequently to keep those germs on public door knobs flowing down with the drain. Let's stay well. And if you want to share your home remedies, email them to me at http://www.pathchoicepastoralcounseling.weebly.com.
