Obituary: Charron Hollene Hearn
Charron Hollene (Pitts) Hearn passed away on Sunday, September 20, 2026, at UNC Lenoir Hospital. She was born in Columbus, GA, to the late Hollis and Olene (Davis) Pitts on September 9, 1942.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 25, 2026, 4:00 PM, at Edwards Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. A reception will be held at the family’s home following the service. Burial is private.
Charron grew up in the beautiful southwest Georgia town of Thomasville. It’s known as the “City of Roses”. She was blessed with teachers who taught and inspired her to pursue acting and love of literature. This resulted in her being recruited by Mercer University and Florida State University by their drama departments. She chose Mercer because it was smaller, and they offered scholarships, work aid, and money to pay her own way. The first time Jim saw her she was the “bread girl” serving in the cafeteria. This began a courtship that lasted through her 84th birthday and 63 wedding anniversaries.
Charron was a beautiful, quiet, private, deep feeling individual with a drive and determination to be the best at anything she did and to bring out the best in her family, and especially, her students. She was at her best in front of a classroom of teenage students who had no clue of their potential to master writing and speaking the English language. She felt her mission in life was to teach and inspire them to reach their full potential. “Whether they wanted to or not". Her students test scores and future success in college and business validated a job well done.
After retirement, Charron became a full-time gardener. Her yard became her classroom and the focus of her never-ending search for excellence. Anyone who has strolled through her yard would attest that her efforts have produced beautiful results.
Finally, the river. This was her spiritual haven. The vista of sun rises and sunsets, clouds and thunderstorms, the quiet lapping of the waves against the sea wall. This is where she and God had deep discussions on all things, especially on the beauty and mysteries of nature. During these meditations the problems of the world, the aches and pains brought on by old age, and the menial everyday cliches were forgotten, and her quiet peace was attained.
In addition to her parents, Charron is preceded in death by her brother, Clayton Pitts, and her sister, Latrelle Stockton.
She is survived by her beloved husband, James (Jim) Hearn; her daughter, Shartra Sylivant (Jim) of Wilson; her son, Herschel Cabot Hearn of Kinston, and her sister, Phyllis Brinson (Armond) of Griffin, GA.
