Lenoir County restaurant inspections

The following restaurant inspections were conducted by the Lenoir County Health Department:

Piggly Wiggly Deli

2202 Hwy 258 N, Kinston 

Date: 6/17

Score: 92

Observations:

Can opener blade is soiled with something white - paper? netting?

Four to five out of many utensils have not been cleaned thoroughly.

Cook states five pans of baked chicken in oven are 'done'. Chicken in one pan is 170f+ and is removed from oven, but chicken in the other four pans ranges from 155-164f.

Hot foods shall be kept at 135f or above. For 'smoked pit' section, previously this department recommended keeping foods towards the back, as temperatures are typically hotter in the back. Today, they were more towards the front of the case.

A rolling rack of food, mostly breakfast food, pulled from walk-in some time this morning and is at room temperature.

Cold foods shall be kept at 41f or below. Do not pull foods out of refrigerator until needed. The temperature of foods being kept at room temperature rises above 41f which can make foods unsafe to eat.

No consumer advisory posted for eggs. 

Several containers and spray bottles of chemicals are stored hanging on a metal rack so that packages of buns, aluminum foil wrappers for backed potatoes, and other single-service items could get contaminated by drips.

Dry ingredients are not labelled.

Two food handlers wear bracelets.

Single-use portion cups with no handle stored in dry ingredients as scoops. 

Several single-service containers are stored with lids off or not inverted on bottom shelf of table near 3-compartment sink and handwash sink. Some crumbs in them. Those with crumbs or those on top discarded immediately. 

The doors of the deli meat and cheese case have duct tape on them. Some rusty shelving. Rusty shopping carts (why are shopping carts in the kitchen?). Rust on front line bar.

No chlorine strips available. Establishment has bleach but is using Quats only today.

Bottom shelf of table where single service items are stored, shopping carts, black 'fabric' in deli case, deli case vents, some other shelving, etc. are soiled.

Floors are heavily soiled in some areas, especially between ovens. Floor in walk-in freezer is heavily soiled. Some containers on the floor. Walls are soiled in several areas. 


Captains Corner 

711 Plaza Boulevard, Kinston

Observations: 

Employees prepping food, handling clean equipment, and opened single service without wearing an effective hair restraint.

Food processor is not ANSI certified or NSF or equivalent.

Restrooms missing self closure devices on doors. Replace self closure device on restrooms doors.

Replace burned out bulb in reach in freezer. All reach in coolers and reach in freezers shall be equipped with 20 ft candles of lighting.


Brighthouse Mart and Grill 

5189 Hwy 55 W, Kinston

Observations: 

No Certified Food Protection Manager on shift at the time of inspection. 

No soap present at hand-washing sink. No paper towels available at hand-wash sink.

All items in the top of the lift-top were temping at 48 - 54 degrees. Items were prepped this morning, but inspection was following lunch rush. Temp range was taken at the beginning of the inspection (52) and at the end (48) prior to the report being written. REHS explained the importance of keeping lift-top lid closed when not in use to maintain temperature. 

Employee not wearing hair restraints.

Single-use and single-service articles cannot be reused. Old chili containers being reused for tea/spices.

Rust present in reach-in cooler and reach-in freezer units.

Double burner not ANSI certified, it is a piece of residential equipment.

Hot water not available at prep sink. Establishment shall ensure hot water is available at all fixtures.

Observed leak at handwash sink. Mop sink lacking back flow preventer on hot water side. Backflow preventer shall be provided.

Dumpster missing side door and uncovered.

Holes in wall behind handwashing sink in kitchen.

Lots of excessive items in back storage areas. If not used by establishment, it needs to be removed from premises to allow proper cleaning to take place.

Floors and walls need heavily additional cleaning. Holes in women's bathroom have been covered by duct tape. This is not an approved method of repair as it cannot be easily cleaned.

Queen Street Deli & Bakery

115 S Queen Street, Kinston

Observations: 

Tomato basil soup in soup kettle was 104-133 degrees F at 11:03 am. PIC stated soup was placed in soup kettle to reheat around 9:30 am. Foods cooked and cooled in the facility shall be reheated to 165 degrees F within 2 hours.

Pasta salad cold holding on counter was 46 degrees F today. Pasta salad was directly beside rice cooker/warmer, which was increasing the temperature.

Store cake pans upside down (inverted) to prevent contamination of food contact area.

Domestic crock pots (Hamilton Beach) stored on top of microwave were being used to hot hold side items, such as baked potatoes.

Toilet seat in men's restroom is broken. Replace back kitchen microwave that is in poor repair.

Clean floor under racks holding dry goods containers beside oven/stove and in walk-in cooler. Clean floor behind and under all equipment along walls and shelving. Clean pipes/drain at 3 compartment sink.

UNC Lenoir Healthcare

100 Airport Road, Kinston

Observations: 

No paper towels at front hand wash sink available after washing hands.

Whisk found inside handwash sink.

Several dirty utensils observed stored with clean dishes. Fryer baskets are heavily coated and require additional cleaning.

One container of salsa missing label, salads found to have inconsistent labeling.

One salad found that had a discard date of 6/9.

Cups of ice observed being stacked in grates on top of each other in reach-in freezer.

One wet wiping cloth observed on front line.

Clean utensils stored in a soiled container.

Single Service and Single Use items shall be kept in the original protective package or stored using other means that protect the item until used. Items on front line were flipped up, where the food would be stored.

Build up present on shelving, prep tables, outside of equipment, equipment doors, bowl and dish cart, steamwell table. Dust on back of tv monitors on front line.

Leak present at faucet of three compartment sink, prep sink across from ovens, and at rinse sink in dish machine. Pipe at prep sink across from ovens is missing the drain under the sink, this should be moved so water to properly drain.

Heavy build up is present under equipment and around the bases of the walls, especially under sinks and around grease trap. Build up is present on walls behind fryers and grill area. These areas need heavy, additional cleaning to address the build up that is present. Water is still pooling over the filled in drain under dishwashing area, and behind the steamer.

Provide required lighting intensity. Several lights are out under hood on cook line.

Baron and the Beef

1631 Hwy 70 E, Kinston

Observations: 

Bag of yellow onions received from food supplier yesterday had onions that were in poor condition and beginning to rot. Gnats/fruit flies were present in and around the bag.

Cheddar cheese spread 45-53 degrees F on the counter ; shredded lettuce on salad bar 47 degrees F. All cold holding TCS foods shall be maintained at 41 degrees F or below.

Cinnamon sugar, steak seasonings, and other items out of their original containers were not labeled today.

Employees washing dishes and prepping food with no effective hair restraint on today.

Bowls and plates stored food contact surface up in various areas around facility. Clean equipment, such as plates and bowls, shall be stored food contact area down to prevent contamination.

Clean shelving in walk-in cooler. Clean hood vents. Continue cleaning of nonfood contact surfaces.

Toilet in ladies' restroom and urinal in men's restroom is "out of order". Another toilet and urinal is available for use. Repair these items that are not in good repair.

Much floor and wall cleaning throughout facility. Detailed floor and wall cleaning needed under all equipment and behind all equipment, paying attention to walls in walk-in cooler and in dishwashing room.

Need more lighting in restrooms. Lighting in women's restroom is 4-13 ft candles. Need at least 20 ft candles of lighting, 30 inches off the floor in restrooms.

Midway Mart & Grill, LLC

8176 Hwy 258 S, Pink Hill

Observations: 

Handwashing sink beside ice machine missing soap.

Slaw in lift-top cooler that was pulled from the large labeled container, missing label.

Labels wrong in front reach-in cooler, date marking was off by a day (day one being date after preparation, instead of the day of preparation being day 1 of 7).

Several flies present in back prep room.

3 containers stacked wet together.

Heavy buildup of dust/grease present around grill. The hood filters need cleaning as well.

Receptacle sliding door open. Receptacle shall remain covered.

Drains in dumpsters and waste containers shall have drain plugs in place. Both dumpsters missing drain plugs.

Wall behind grill is soiled and needs additional cleaning.

Storage building outside needs lighting. Currently, there is none. For dry storage, a required 10 foot candles of light is needed.

3 employee drinks found scattered around back prep room over food items.

Pizza Plus 

4149 Hwy 11 S, Deep Run

Observations: 

Single-use and single-service articles cannot be reused. Several empty containers of chili and buckets from past food items sitting in the clean dishes rack. Chili bucket observed to be holding bacon in lifttop cooler.

Cutting boards on lifttop unit observed to have deep grooves in them. Establishment shall ensure cutting boards can be effectively cleaned. If they cannot be, establishment shall repair or replace.

Observed accumulated grease, and other debris on equipment and equipment doors.

Heavy grease build up present in establishment on floors, walls and ceilings around grill and pizza oven area.

Floor worn down at lifttop unit and hole in the floor in front of handwash sink.

Lions Water Adventure Concession Stand

2602 W Vernon Avenue, Kinston

Observations: 

Opened boxes and bags of raw hamburgers, raw chicken tenders, and raw chicken breast filets stored above French fries in reach in freezer. All foods shall be stored according to final internal cooking temperatures in freezers once hermetically sealed products are opened. Foods shall be stored according to final internal cooking temperatures from highest to lowest shelving: Ready to eat foods such as produce and French fries, raw seafood products, raw pork products, raw beef products, raw poultry products on the lowest shelving.

Employees cooking and prepping food without hair restraints today.

Need test strips onsite to check concentration of quat sanitizer, if sanitizer will be available for use in establishment.

One toilet is not working in women's restroom.

Electrolux

4850 W Vernon Avenue, Kinston

Observations: 

Food handler runs register for several customers then returns to kitchen, dons gloves, pulls plastic wrap from roll, and begins to wrap some food.

In freezer, two-three pans of food are not date marked.

Squirt bottles of syrup that has been removed from original packaging are not labelled.

Slices of pizza are put in boats with no cover or wrapping and put in hot hold for customer self-service. Employees are within site of the self-service area most of the time, but during lunch rush, they are not monitoring the food. Either approved protection shall be provided or employees shall monitor this with no break in monitoring.

Vinyl coving areas are rough and hard to clean. Vinyl coving falling off the wall. Floor tiles separated behind ice machine. Wall damage in area of clean utensil storage and air-drying - possibly flaking on utensils.
