Lenoir County restaurant inspections

The following restaurant inspections were conducted by the Lenoir County Health Department:

Captains Corner 

711 Plaza Boulevard, Kinston 

Date: 12/05

Score: 98

Observations: 

Knife seen in hand-washing sink beside fryers today. All hand-washing sinks shall be used for hand-washing only and may not be used for any other purposes beside hand-washing.

Chlorine sanitizer mixed with soapy water today. All sanitizers shall not be diluted with other substances and shall meet the requirements specified in 40 CFR 180.940.

Door open on dumpster.

Paint is peeling on floor in back storage area where 3 compartment sink is located. Repair wall/floor behind fryers where gap is located; no coving or baseboards in this area. 

Bulbs burned out in back storage area where reach in freezer and 3 compartment sink is located. Lighting in this area is 19-22 ft candles.

Observations: 

Several empty containers of chili and buckets from past food items sitting in the clean dishes rack. Single service articles cannot be reused. 

Cutting boards on lifttop unit observed to have deep grooves in them.

Observed accumulated grease, and other debris on equipment and equipment doors, inside reach in coolers, gaskets and pizza pans. 

Heavy grease build up present in establishment on floors, walls and cleanings.

Baseboard in storage room still damaged.

Provide required lighting intensity. In areas were food prep is done, lighting should measure at 50 foot candles.


Sugar Hill Pizzeria, Inc.

211 N Herritage Street, Kinston

Observations: 

Some food was not date marked with correct prep date.

Some single service articles were visibly soiled. 

Fryer basket mesh is starting to come apart. Baskets have sharp edges and pieces that could contaminate food. Replace as needed. Plastic coating on inside of door on reach-in cooler, where dough is stored, is coming off (cracking and chipping) and gasket on the reach-in freezer is in disrepair.

Shelving, electrical cords, flat top legs/table, and food containers need additional cleaning.

Wall around hood and behind 3-comp sink and floors around equipment are soiled.

Floor covering in kitchen coming off.


Hwy 55 of Kinston

4130 W Vernon Avenue, Kinston

Observations: 

Crock pots are not made to reheat large quantities of food. Use methods approved by Hwy 55 and NC Food Code from proper reheating of foods.

Container of hot dogs at the top of small prep cooler not dated today.

Spray bottle of Dawn dish detergent and water not labeled today. All chemicals shall be labeled with their common name.

Spray bottles of chemicals, such as sanitizer and degreaser, stored on shelving directly beside shrimp breading. Top of shrimp breading container was directly adjacent to bottom of chemicals. Lid was on shrimp breading, but chemicals could still be knocked over into breading.

Jars of candy stored at custard area are not labeled. 

Shrimp breader bucket stored on the floor on main cook line today. All food and food products shall be stored at least 6 inches off the floor.

Employee cooking food items, such as hamburgers, French fries, etc. with a beard today. All employees with beards, handling food and clean equipment shall wear a beard restraint.

One wet wiping cloth seen stored on shelving with chemicals on main cook line (where shrimp breader bucket was stored). One wet wiping cloth seen stored on shelving beside can opener. All wet wiping cloths shall be stored in buckets of sanitizer at its correct concentration.

Small cup with no handles used to scoop cherries and assorted candy for custard. Pitcher used to scoop sugar was stored handle down inside of the sugar. All containers used to scoop foods that are non TCS shall have a handle and handle must be stored outside of the food.

Single service spoons stored in several different directions in plastic drawer under front counter. All single service utensils shall be stored in one direction to prevent contamination of food contact area.

Replace torn gasket on 3 door freezer. Replace loose handle on steamer. Remove tape from handles on 3 door cooler. Cabinet under custard machine is heavily rusted. Replace wire shelving that has chipping paint in back storage area. 

Clean outside of shrimp breader bucket. Clean back of fryers to remove grease build up. Clean shelving under front counter and containers holding condiments. Clean wire shelving in back storage area. Clean trash can that is stored upside down and used as storage table. Clean 2 floor fans to remove grease and dust build up. Clean filter grate on ice machine. Clean inside of 3 door cooler and freezer to remove accumulated food debris. Remove packaging (film) from outside of new ice machine unit. All nonfood contact surfaces shall be kept clean.

Repair self closure device on mens restroom door. All restroom doors shall be kept closed and automatically close, except during times of cleaning.

Need trash can by handwashing in back storage area. No trash can conveniently located in this area.

Trash cans used inside facility are being cleaned on asphalt behind building. This is leaving grease residue/build up in this area. All garbage receptacles shall be cleaned on surfaces where waste water shall be properly disposed of - in designated can wash/service area.

Repair baseboard that is not attached to the wall behind 3 compartment sink. Floor tiles are worn on main cook line; repair this area. 


Jo's Cafe

709 Kinston Boulevard, Pink Hill

Observations: 

Two buckets of sanitizer too strong.

Basket of lids on clean dish rack visibly soiled and sticky to the touch. 

There are a few broken tiles present in the back storage area and kitchen.

Employee drink stored with clean dishes.
