Rachel Elizabeth Harper
February 21, 1942 - May 1, 2026
Rachel Elizabeth Harper, 84, peacefully passed from this life on Friday, May 1, 2026. Born on February 21, 1942, in Nansemond County, Virginia, Rachel was the beloved daughter of the late Pun W. Wilkins and Pattie Jenkins Wilkins.
Rachel was welcomed into eternal rest by those who went before her, including her parents; her three husbands, Ernest “Pee Wee” Murphy, Charlie Wilkins, and Howard Carl Harper; her sister, Bertha Wilkins; her brothers, George Wilkins, Tom Wilkins, and Jackie Wilkins; and her cherished Godmother, Edna Hill.
Rachel was a woman of quiet strength, deep compassion, and unwavering independence. She took great pride in caring for herself and living life on her own terms. One of her proudest accomplishments was being recognized as the Mayor’s Committee for Persons with Disabilities Employee of the Year in 1990, an honor that reflected her determination, dedication, and resilience.
Rachel found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved shopping, especially treasure hunting at the flea market, where she could spend hours browsing for hidden gems. She was an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed keeping up with every race and cheering on her favorite drivers. Her love for animals was evident to all who knew her—she could never bear to see an animal hungry and always showed them kindness. Rachel also found peace and happiness in growing flowers, especially the brightest and most colorful blooms. And for many years, those closest to her knew of her fond love for Pepsi.
Above all, Rachel will be remembered for her gentle spirit, her caring heart, and the love she shared with those around her. Her presence brought comfort, and her memory will continue to bloom in the hearts of those who loved her.
Rachel leaves behind to cherish her memory Patricia Jones of Seven Springs, Dean Hill and wife Barbara of Reidsville, Denise Buffkin and husband Danny of Willow Springs, and Elliott Hill of Seven Springs, along with many extended family members and friends who will miss her dearly.
A Graveside Service to honor Rachel’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at Wayne Memorial Park, 2925 US 117, Dudley, NC 28333.
