Evelyn Dove Coleman: Easter Is A Reminder
The observance of Holy Week from Palm Sunday to Good Friday to Easter Sunday is one of the largest of the year. Maundy Monday is the Monday of Holy Week, the week leading up to Easter. It is the day following Palm Sunday. Maundy comes from the Latin word mandatum meaning commandment, reflecting Jesus having given a new commandment.
His words were: “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:34-35)
Jesus went around doing good, helping people, feeding the hungry, healing the sick, yielding miracles. He demonstrated love. Yet, he was publicly maligned and crucified. The story didn't end with the burial however. Easter Sunday hails the Resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after his Crucifixion at Calvary. Let it remind us of the new Commandment to love one another.
