Obituary: Susan Edwards Moore

Susan Edwards Moore, 76, of Kinston, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 19, surrounded by her family after a battle with cancer.

A celebration of her beautiful life will be held at Edwards Funeral Home in Kinston, NC, on Saturday, March 28, 2026. A visitation with the family will be held from 10:30โ€“12:00, with a funeral service following at noon. Graveside services will be private.

Susan was born in Kinston, North Carolina, to the late Cornell and Frances Edwards and was the oldest of four children. She had a happy childhood, raised on a farm, and loved telling stories about the many adventures she shared with her parents and siblings, growing tobacco and raising almost everything they ate. Her parents instilled in her a strong faith and the importance of sharing with and serving others.

Susan graduated from North Lenoir High School in 1967 and married the love of her life, Anthony Moore, the same month. They were blessed to share 58 years of marriage and raised two children. While working full-time and still devoting herself to her family and children, Susan earned a business degree from Mount Olive College, graduating with honors and a 4.0 GPA. She spent the majority of her career working at the Lenoir County Department of Social Services. She worked there from September 1978 through December 2016โ€”over 38 yearsโ€”and served as director for the final five years. She was very dedicated to her work and enjoyed serving the community. She enjoyed traveling with Anthony, quilting, reading, and especially spending time with her family. Susan had an extraordinary memory and a remarkable ability to recall even the smallest details, and her family cherished the many, many stories from her life that she so vividly remembered and loved to retell.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Cornell and Frances Edwards of Kinston; sisters-in-law, Margie Bednar of Yulee, FL, and Pat Edwards of Kinston, NC; nephews, Jay Eubanks and Thos Lohre; and niece, Laura Hill.

Susan is survived by her husband, Anthony Moore, of Kinston; and two children: daughter, Jennifer Moore McMahon (Jeff) of Huntersville, North Carolina, and son, Steven Moore (Kelee) of Kinston; six grandchildren: Courtney Hill (Ryan), Kate McMahon (Ethan), Caroline Moore (Warren), Josh McMahon (Carrie), Emily McMahon, and Jack McMahon; and three great-grandchildren, Emmitt and Addie Hill, and Everette Waller.

She is also survived by her sister, Judy Hill of Vilas, NC; and two brothers, Cornell (Bud) Edwards Jr. (Sharon) and Dennis Edwards (Nanci), both of Kinston; sisters-in-law, Linda Eubanks (Jimmy) of Fernandina Beach, FL, and Irene Moore (Tom) of Cincinnati, OH; and many special nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. 930-B Wellness Dr, Greenville, NC 27834.
