Celebrating Women’s History Month and the all-female surgical team at UNC Health Lenoir
Every March, Women’s History Month reminds us to pause and celebrate the women who have changed the world, especially those who’ve done it by healing others. Medicine hasn’t always been an easy field for women to break into, but from the first female doctors in the 1800s to today’s surgical leaders, women have pushed through barriers with intelligence, compassion, and grit.
We owe a lot to early trailblazers like Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman in the U.S. to earn a medical degree, and Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler, the first Black woman physician. They opened the doors for generations of women who followed, women like those right here in Kinston making history in their own way.
At UNC Surgical Associates at Lenoir, a talented female team is doing just that. The group, Dr. Jamie Serrano, Dr. Pamela Masella, Dr. Jennifer Allison, Kim Wade, Nurse Practitioner, and Ashley Faulkner, Nurse Practitioner, is leading the way in surgical care for our community. From laparoscopic and robotic surgeries to breast and bariatric weight-loss procedures, they combine cutting-edge technology with a personal commitment to their patients.
What makes this team special isn’t just their skill. It’s the way they approach care, as women who understand how compassion and expertise go hand in hand. They lift one another up, take care of their patients like family, and show younger generations that women can and should lead in every field, including medicine.
This Women’s History Month, we celebrate the women who came before and the ones still blazing trails today. At UNC Surgical Associates at Lenoir, they’re proving every day that when women lead, communities thrive.
