Dec 3 UNC Health Lenoir elevates care through robotic innovation

UNC Health Lenoir is proud to announce the arrival of the state-of-the-art da Vinci 5 robotic surgical system, marking a significant milestone in the advancement of surgical care for Kinston, Lenoir County, and the surrounding region. The da Vinci 5 represents the newest generation of robotic-assisted technology. The first procedure using the da Vinci 5 at UNC Health Lenoir was successfully performed on December 2, 2025, by Dr. Jennifer Allison, General and Bariatric Surgeon.

“From a surgeon’s perspective, the da Vinci 5 offers enhanced precision, improved visualization, and better access to the surgical site, especially in more complex cases,” Dr. Allison explained. “For patients, this translates into smaller incisions, reduced pain, a lower risk of infection, and faster recovery times. It truly improves every stage of the surgical experience.”

As a community not-for-profit hospital, UNC Health Lenoir remains committed to providing exceptional care for eastern North Carolina. Dr. Hayden emphasized the importance of ensuring access to advanced surgical options locally. “In the past, patients often had to travel to larger cities to receive advanced robotic surgery,” she said. “Unfortunately, not all patients and families are able to travel long distances for specialized care. Our mission is to remove that burden by offering innovative, high-quality care right here in Kinston and Lenoir County.”

UNC Health Lenoir has recently welcomed two general and bariatric surgeons, Dr. Jennifer Allison and Dr. Pamela Masella, both of whom bring extensive expertise in robotic-assisted surgery. Their skill, combined with the capabilities of the da Vinci 5 system, significantly expands the hospital’s ability to provide advanced treatments in multiple surgical specialties.
