Maysville Fire and EMS Earns Improved ISO Rating Following State Inspection

Maysville, NC — The Maysville Fire and EMS has received an improved fire protection rating following a routine inspection conducted by the North Carolina Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) as part of the North Carolina Response Rating System (NCRRS).

State Fire Marshal Brian Taylor announced that the Maysville Municipal Fire District has been awarded an ISO rating of 3, effective May 1, 2026. This improvement reflects years of progress and marks a continued upward trend in the Town of Maysville’s fire protection capabilities.

For perspective, Maysville’s ISO rating stood at 9 in 2016, with 10 being the worst possible rating. The department later improved to a 5 and has now achieved a 3, placing Maysville among communities with strong and reliable fire protection services.

ISO and NCRRS ratings evaluate multiple aspects of a fire department’s operations, including staffing levels, firefighter training, equipment, maintenance, emergency communications, and the availability of an adequate water supply. These inspections are required by state law for departments serving districts with populations of 100,000 or fewer.

According to OSFM, the NCRRS rating scale ranges from 1 (highest level of fire protection) to 10 (not recognized as a certified fire department). Higher ratings indicate a department is better equipped to respond to emergencies and can also result in significantly lower homeowners’ insurance premiums for residents within the fire district.

Fire Chief Michael Jordan credited the department’s volunteers and community support for the achievement.

“This rating represents years of dedication, training, and teamwork by our firefighters,” said Chief Jordan. “Going from a 9 to a 3 did not happen overnight. It reflects the commitment of our volunteers, the support of town leadership, and a shared mission to protect lives and property in Maysville.”

Mayor Wayne Sayland highlighted the direct benefit to residents.

“This is a major win for Maysville,” said Mayor Sayland. “An improved ISO rating strengthens public safety and can lead to lower homeowners’ insurance costs for our citizens. I am extremely proud of the Maysville Volunteer Fire Department and grateful for their continued service to our community.”

State Fire Marshal Brian Taylor extended congratulations to Chief Jordan and the department.

“The residents of the Coastal and Maysville fire districts can take comfort in knowing this highly capable team of firefighters from the Maysville Fire and EMS, Inc. is safeguarding them and their belongings in the event of an emergency,” Taylor said.

Residents are encouraged to contact their insurance providers after May 1, 2026, to inquire about how the improved ISO rating may impact their insurance premiums.

The Town of Maysville and its citizens commend the men and women of the Maysville Volunteer Fire Department for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to public safety.
