Obituary: Nathan Bryan Hardy Jr.
Nathan Bryan Hardy Jr., age 79, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday morning, October 31, 2026, at Rex Hospital. Although he endured many years of challenges with lung and heart conditions, his deep and unwavering faith carried him through. Today, we find comfort in knowing that Bryan is finally at peace, completely healed, and resting in the arms of his Savior.
A lifelong resident of Lenoir County and the Seven Springs community, Bryan was a man whose roots ran deep. He was a familiar and valued part of the community he called home throughout his life.
Bryan attended Moss Hill School and South Lenoir High School before continuing his education at Lenoir Community College. It was during his college years that he met a wonderful young lady, Grace Dawson, who would become his beloved wife. They shared 50 years of marriage together until her passing in 2018.
Bryan enjoyed a fulfilling career with Ciba-Geigy and Monsanto, where he worked as a research technician in the production and harvesting of corn and soybeans, including Roundup testing. He often joked that he was "getting paid to farm," a job he thoroughly enjoyed. His love for agriculture and the land was evident throughout his life.
A man of many talents, Bryan could almost always be found in his workshop, building something, fixing something, or simply tinkering with whatever project had caught his attention. He had a knack for figuring things out and a genuine enjoyment of working with his hands. When the day's projects were finished, he could often be found settling in with a good Western book. Among his greatest joys was fishing with his wife, Nancy, a special pastime they shared and treasured together right up until his final days.
One of Bryan's most special qualities was his sweet and gentle nature. He had a kind heart, a quiet way about him, and a genuine goodness that those who knew him appreciated. He was never one to seek attention, but his thoughtfulness, kindness, and willingness to lend a helping hand spoke volumes about the person he was. Bryan had a way of making people feel comfortable and welcomed, and his gentle spirit will be remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He was truly one of the good ones, and the world was a little sweeter because he was in it.
Bryan's faith was an important part of who he was. He was a longtime member of Holy Innocents Episcopal Church, where he faithfully served in numerous positions throughout the years. He was also an active member of the Moss Hill Ruritan Club, serving as treasurer and giving his time to support the community he loved. In recent years, he was a member of Bethel Fellowship Church on Hood Swamp Road in LaGrange, North Carolina.
Visitation will be held Sunday, November 8, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at Bethel Fellowship Church, located at 1882 Hood Swamp Road, LaGrange, North Carolina. The funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m. in the church sanctuary. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in La Grange.
Bryan was preceded in death by his parents, Nathan Bryan Hardy Sr. and Florine Becton Hardy; his beloved first wife, Grace Dawson Hardy; and two special four-legged companions, his cat, Tipper, and his Rat Terrier, Scooter.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife of seven years, Nancy Cates Hardy; his two brothers, William Oscar "Billy" Hardy and wife, Debbie Vinson Hardy, of Seven Springs, and John Franklin Hardy and wife, Rose, of Wake Forest; one nephew and one niece; along with extended family and many dear friends.
Bryan will be remembered for his unwavering faith, his sweet and gentle spirit, his kind heart, his hardworking nature, his resourcefulness, his love of the outdoors, and his appreciation for life's simple pleasures. He was a man who found happiness in a day spent working in his workshop, a good Western novel, time spent fishing, and the people and animals who held a special place in his heart.
Though our hearts are saddened by his passing, we are grateful for the life he lived, the memories he leaves behind, and the example of faith, kindness, and perseverance he shared with those around him.
His earthly journey has ended, but his legacy of faith, love, hard work, and service will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Well done, good and faithful servant. — Matthew 25:23
Until we meet again, Bryan. You will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
