Greene County sheriff warns of phone scam involving arrest warrants
The Greene County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam in which callers impersonate sheriff’s office personnel and demand payment to avoid arrest.
According to a notice from Sheriff Sasser, scammers tell residents they have an outstanding warrant but can avoid being arrested by sending money.
The sheriff’s office said its staff and other legitimate law enforcement officers will never call and demand money to make a warrant go away.
Some callers may sound convincing, have personal information about the person they are targeting or direct them to a local location to meet.
Residents who receive such calls should hang up without sending money and immediately contact the Greene County Sheriff’s Office at 252-747-3411. A deputy can meet with them to take a report.
