Evelyn Dove Coleman: Verna Mae Chapman Was Regal

Evelyn Dove Coleman: Verna Mae Chapman Was Regal

Majestic, dignified, splendid. These are words that described Mrs. Verna Mae Chapman of Grifton, North Carolina. When her daughter Jean Hill told me that her mother's health was frail, I began remembering her from decades ago. I met her daughters in the first grade at Savannah High School. Jean and Faye were to later become majorettes under Ms. Kathryn Jones. They were already well-poised for the job because of their mother.

Mrs. Verna Mae was regal. She possessed a bearing characterized by stately elegance. Her very presence commanded our respect. Her composure radiated grace and strength. She carried herself with unhurried confidence. Her speech was quiet and sure, so that people leaned in to hear her wisdom. Despite the adversities of life, she exuded a firm faith for others to emulate.

Her services will be held by Swinson Funeral Home. And, I'm sure her seven surviving daughters will celebrate her Psalm 91 long life. In November she would have turned 97. That is nearly a century of living, seeing, doing, being. I feel privileged to have known Mrs. Verna Mae Chapman and wish her clan peace in knowing we have a heavenly home of rest.
