City plans demolition of three condemned properties, 118 remain on list
Kinston officials are moving forward with the demolition of three condemned properties, while more than 100 others remain under review, according to a demolition update scheduled for presentation to City Council.
The city will demolish structures at 910 and 912 Tower Hill Road, 1015 Hicks Street, and 1510 Parker Street at a combined cost of $41,200. Carolina Earth Movers and T&C Construction Group were awarded the contracts after a rebidding process.
The initial contractor selected for three demolitions declined the award, prompting the city to re-advertise the bids in November. City staff reported receiving bids from three contractors during the second solicitation.
Planning officials noted that condemnation does not automatically lead to demolition. Some properties may be repaired. However, once demolition is complete, the city plans to place liens on the affected properties and explore possible foreclosure.
City staff also reported that 118 additional properties remain on Kinston’s condemnation list, with ownership research ongoing.
The Kinston City Council will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, at City Hall, located at 200 N. Queen St. The meeting is open to the public.
