Kinston to accept $65,000 grant for bike and pedestrian planning

The Kinston City Council will consider accepting a $65,000 multimodal planning grant from the North Carolina Department of Transportation to update the city’s bicycle and pedestrian network plan.

The grant will cover 80 percent of the project cost, with the city responsible for a $13,000 local match. The updated plan is intended to identify priority areas for sidewalks, bike lanes, crosswalks, and other pedestrian infrastructure.

Kinston’s current pedestrian plan was adopted in 2012. An update was started in 2020 but was not completed due to staffing changes.

City officials said the new plan will support future grant applications and align with other initiatives, including the city’s Safer Streets project and Lenoir County’s Neuse Riverwalk planning effort.

If accepted, council will direct the finance director to prepare a budget amendment at a future meeting.

The Kinston City Council will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, at City Hall. The meeting is open to the public.
