Two brothers have been charged in connection with separate homicides that occurred just days apart on the same block of East Bright Street.
On Thursday, August 28, at approximately 11:53 p.m., Kinston Police officers responded to the 500 block of East Bright Street and found 52-year-old Daryl Dudley inside an apartment with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound. Dudley was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following an investigation, detectives obtained warrants for 22-year-old Prince Ellison in connection with Dudley’s murder. On September 16, at approximately 9:00 p.m., Ellison was taken into custody without incident at a residence in Walstonburg by members of the Kinston Police Department SWAT Team, KPD Investigations Division, the Lenoir County Special Response Team, and the Greene County Sheriff’s Office.
A little more than a week after Dudley’s death, on Saturday, September 6, at approximately 11:50 p.m., Kinston officers were called back to the 500 block of East Bright Street for another shooting. Officers located 20-year-old Dishon Blount suffering from a gunshot wound outside. Despite lifesaving measures, Blount died at the scene.
Detectives later obtained warrants for 20-year-old Jataves Ellison in connection with Blount’s murder. He was arrested without incident on September 18 at a residence on Railfence Drive.
Kinston Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Brian Biggins confirmed that Prince and Jataves Ellison are brothers. “I can confirm that arrest one and arrest two are brothers,” Biggins said. “These are two different murders in a few weeks. The investigators do not believe the two murders are connected.”
In a statement issued on behalf of Chief Keith Goyette, the department thanked assisting agencies “for their outstanding teamwork and support in bringing this investigation to a safe conclusion.”
Both investigations remain active. Police ask anyone with information to contact the Kinston Police Department at 252-939-4020, Lenoir County Crime Stoppers at 252-523-4444, or submit tips anonymously through the KPD iWITNESS program or Tip411 app. Calls to Crime Stoppers are confidential, and tipsters may be eligible for a cash reward.
