Amvets Women’s Auxiliary delivers 50th blanket to Kinston veterans home

The Amvets Chapter 1111, Women’s Auxiliary met to deliver homemade blankets to the veteran’s at the North Carolina Veterans Home in Kinston. These blankets have been made by the Women’s auxiliary members and are part of a commitment to provide each Veteran at the home a blanket to honor their service to the nation. Each blanket has a star from a decommissioned flag sewn on it to show it was from the women’s auxiliary. This makes the 50th blanket delivered, with 50 more to make and deliver. The Community has now begun to participate in this project, with additional blankets being made and donated from Deep Run Church, Pat Ipock and Carol Cantu.

Amvets Women’s Auxiliary post 1111 is part of a national organization made up of female Veterans or relatives involved with Amvets. The organization provides a range of services to support Veterans, communities and other non-profit organizations focuses on Americanism, Animals and Children. Community Volunteers who would like to donate homemade blankets can drop them off at GI JOES Military Museum. An additional fifty blankets will need to be made to cover the remaining halls.

This project has been a labor of love. As each blanket is delivered the Auxiliary members get to talk with the Veterans and hear their stories. It has been a true honor. If you would like to learn more about Amvets or the ladies auxiliary information on both organizations are also available at GI Joes. Both organizations meet the first Monday of the month at 6:00pm. New members or persons of interest are welcome.
