Public Statement from Kimberly Mitchell
Former Director, Lenoir County SPCA
To the community, supporters, and advocates of animal welfare, especially at the LCSPCA and surrounding communities.
I want to publicly address my recent and involuntary departure from my role as Director of the Lenoir County SPCA. This decision was not made lightly as the board has stated. However, it is a decision that was made, and I am no longer in a position to serve the shelter in the way I had hoped to continue.
Throughout my time at the Lenoir County SPCA, I remained fully committed to our mission of protecting vulnerable animals, ensuring they received proper care, and working with an incredible team of staff and volunteers who shared the same dedication. I advocated for transparency, consistency in protocols, and doing what was right — even when it was not the easiest path for us.
Although I am strongly upset, I am not speaking out to create division. My only hope moving forward is that the animals continue to receive the quality of care they deserve, and that the staff still serving there and the volunteers that have been pouring in will continue to do so. To the staff that were there and the staff that have remained, who have worked tirelessly, and often without enough recognition — I hope the support for the animals’ welfare, staff, and the LCSPCA continues.
To those in the community who have supported the shelter and me personally, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Please continue to do so. Please don’t stop supporting them and the cause. At the end of the day that’s what all of us want no matter what our differences may be. I have always done this work for the animals, and that has not changed. While this chapter has ended, my commitment to animal welfare and to doing what’s right will continue in whatever comes next.
I will always support the Fur babies and the LCSPCA and anyone that is doing right by them.
With sincerity and compassion,
Kimberly Mitchell
