Lenoir County SPCA begins construction on animal shelter

The Lenoir County SPCA is hosting a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, August 25, 2022, for a new state of-the-art, 8,000 square foot shelter located at 3200 Highway 258 North. The new shelter is scheduled to open in late 2023. This new facility allows for enhanced animal care as the pet population continues to grow.

With the new shelter, the LCSPCA will be able to help more pets and people that rely on its services.  The shelter will house more dogs and provide more space for enrichment and exercise, house cats in communal rooms to minimize stress and time spent in cages, and offer a private area for individuals who need to surrender their pets. “The new animal shelter will be a major achievement for Lenoir County’s animal-loving community and will help to save lives by providing a loving environment for pet adoption, said Tonya Adams, President of the Lenoir County SPCA.”

The shelter will include rooms for adoption meet and greets, a better ventilation system that will keep animals healthier, shortening their stay at the shelter, provide isolation rooms for pet who are sick and injured, and will be built to meet appropriate safety, security, and ADA guidelines. These approaches require a modern, expanded facility for staff and volunteers to realistically maintain these priorities long-term.

Animal care and welfare has changed substantially since our shelter first opened its doors in 1978. There are new and improved methods for caring for homeless animals, better approaches to providing quality adoption services, and innovative measures for providing better living conditions for the animals in our care. “We appreciate the City of Kinston and Lenoir County’s commitment to improve the lives of animals in our community,” said Eileen Beeson. “The last few decades have seen great strides in animal care and this facility will allow us to provide the very best for animals in Lenoir County.”

Additional amenities include a landscaped open-air courtyard that functions as a central meet-and-greet location for adoptable dogs, sound-absorbent dog kennels, free-roaming cat condos, a small animal area, and a veterinary clinic.
