Esther Almond

November 6, 1933 – July 20, 2025

Seven Springs – Esther Whitfield Almond, 91, was graciously welcomed into the presence of her Lord on July 20, 2025. Born in Wayne County on November 6, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Stenis J. Whitfield and Ruby Lee Etheridge Whitfield. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Monk Whitfield, Dick Whitfield, and Betty W. Williams.

As the devoted wife of a military man, Esther lived in numerous places around the world. Wherever life took her, she never forgot where home was, and she made it a priority to return often. Strong and determined, she faithfully managed her household, raising children, cooking, cleaning, and ensuring the bills maintained, always with care and purpose.

Whether meeting someone for the first time or greeting an old friend, Esther’s kindness made people feel seen and loved. She was known for her warm hugs, her affection for babies, and her ability to make strangers instantly feel like friends.

A great athlete in her own right, Esther enjoyed basketball and softball. Living on the military bases, she was often seen out jogging and could usually surpass the speed of many of the military men.

Sundays were reserved for church attendance with family followed by a gathering around the table for a delicious lunch. As the family rested and relaxed, a card game often came into existence. Esther played to win, and the rules of the game were often dependent upon the hand she was dealt.

A dedicated reader, Esther found the greatest joy in reading her Bible along with Amish romance novels. Her green thumb was notable as she nurtured beautiful flowers and took excellent care of her yard. She especially disliked weeds, particularly dog fennel, and made sure to pull them up the moment they appeared.

Her deep love for the Lord was evident in the way she lived out her faith. Regular church attendance was a priority, yet her daily acts of compassion were the fruit of her relationship with the Lord. Through her quiet gentleness, Esther exhibited the true attributes of a saint.

A service of love and remembrance will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at Rouse Funeral Home, with Rev. Percy Cunningham and Rev. Leon Grubbs officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service. A private committal will follow at Fairview Cemetery.

Esther is survived by her loving husband, James R. Almond; children, Susan V. Coker McCoy and husband Ronnie, Mike Almond and wife Patty, and Robert Almond; grandchildren, Cale Hill and wife Debbie, Alex Almond and wife Taarna, and Michael McCoy and wife Amanda; great-grandchildren, Aiden, Maven, and Kacie; and two dear sisters-in-law, Peggy Whitfield and Carol Almand.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to those who cared for Esther as if she were their own: JoAnn Dixon, Jackie Jimenez, and Shamyia Newkirk.

Online condolences may be shared at www.rousefh.com. Arrangements are entrusted to Rouse Funeral Home, La Grange.
