IT Looks Like Me: Success Stories from Lenoir Community College’s IT Program

That idea is at the heart of “IT Looks Like Me,” which celebrates the wide range of students who are shaping their futures through LCC’s IT program.
The IT program at LCC is designed to equip students with real-world experience and job-ready skills. With experienced faculty who bring industry expertise into the classroom, a supportive community that fosters collaboration, and flexible class options, including a 100% online pathway, students can achieve their IT goals no matter their background. The program also offers industry-recognized IT certifications, ensuring students have the credentials needed to stand out in a competitive job market.
Meet the Faces of IT at LCC
IT Looks Like Andrew Sualevai
Andrew is an adult learner who returned to school last fall to pursue a degree in IT. In just a short time, he has achieved Levels 1-3 of the IC3 Digital Literacy Certification and earned his Microsoft Office Specialist Certification. Recently, he joined LCC’s campus IT department as a work-study student.
“It is not every day that you find a place to test your abilities and design a future fit for yourself. With leaders like Ms. Best and access to the right resources, I’ve been able to build the momentum I need to reach my goals.”
IT Looks Like Nathaniel Bacon-Jarvis
Nathaniel, a senior at Kinston High School, will soon complete his IT - Hardware/Software Support Certificate. Despite facing challenges, he has maintained a 3.0+ GPA and will continue his studies at East Carolina University in the fall.
“April Best and Gabriel Rawlinson are some of the best instructors I've ever had. They really care about their students and go above and beyond to help us succeed.”
IT Looks Like Shemina Royal
Shemina, a veteran, returned to school to pursue an AAS in Information Systems while also working in cybersecurity. His experience at LCC has allowed him to enhance his skills and advance his career.
“My experience at LCC has been challenging but, most importantly, rewarding. The tools I have acquired will allow me to advance my career, and I am thankful for my time as a student here.”
IT Looks Like Michael Albertson
As the Director of the 911 Center in Wayne County, Michael balances work, family, and school while maintaining a 3.5 GPA in the Information Systems program.
“My experience at LCC has significantly enhanced my understanding of the vast field of IT. The program has provided a strong foundation as I take the next steps toward advancing my career.”
IT Looks Like Emily Sawyer
Emily, a Network Management major, started as a Career and College Promise student and has continued her studies at LCC while working. She maintains a 4.0 GPA and will graduate with multiple certifications and her AAS degree.
“My advisor, Ms. Best, has been incredibly supportive throughout my time at LCC. I have enjoyed the online flexibility of this program. My classes, along with the hands-on labs and real-world experiences, have provided wonderful preparation for my future career.”
IT Looks Like Timia Harper
Timia has been working full-time as a nurse but felt drawn to pursue a new path in IT. Now in her final semester, she is excelling in her classes and ready to take the next step in her career. She brings strong attention to detail and a deep sense of pride in her work—qualities that will serve her well in the IT field.
“I have truly appreciated the instructors. They made learning enjoyable and gave me great resources to help me decide what area in the IT field to choose from.”

Yahir is known for his professionalism and commitment to his studies. He has stood out in his networking classes—an area of growing demand in the region—and successfully balances working full-time while completing his coursework. Always willing to support his peers, Yahir has become a trusted and respected presence in the classroom.
