The Cage Lock
Years ago, my cousin-by-marriage told me about a story that imitates real life. It is called "The Howling Man" and was an episode in The Twilight Zone series. Based on the short story written by Charles Beaumont, it had aired on November 4, 1960. Without spoiling it for those who may want to watch it, I will simply focus on one line in the summary. As I read about the man locked in a cage who was howling in agony, I had to back up and re-read one line. It said that the thing holding the door to the cage closed was within the prisoner's reach. Imagine that. The prisoner could have let himself out, but he didn't.
He didn't because the door-holder was called "the staff of truth." Instead, he howled in agony to trick others into letting him out. In real life, the master deceiver enlists people to do his dirty work too. Comedian Flip Wilson became famous by saying "The devil made me do it." People often let themselves be slicked into unwise, unethical behavior. Holding fast to truth will keep that cage closed.
