Kinston/Lenoir Community Chorus Highlights the Full Story Behind Handel’s Messiah
By David Williams
Each Christmas season, the Kinston/Lenoir Community Chorus brings the joy and reverence of the holiday to life with a cherished tradition: the performance of Part 1 of George Frideric Handel’s masterpiece, Messiah. Known for its stirring choruses and unforgettable melodies, Part 1 celebrates the prophecy and birth of Jesus Christ, making it a perfect fit for the Christmas season.
What many may not realize is that Messiah is a complete oratorio in three distinct parts, each offering a powerful reflection on the life, death, and resurrection of Christ—and the promise of eternal life.
Part 1: The Prophecy and Birth of Christ
This opening section, often called the “Christmas Portion,” focuses on the anticipation of a Savior. Drawing from the words of the prophets, especially Isaiah, it moves from the foretelling of Christ’s coming to the joyous announcement of His birth. Beloved pieces such as “For Unto Us a Child Is Born” and “Glory to God” fill the air with celebration and wonder.
Part 2: The Passion and Resurrection
Part two shifts in tone and theme, portraying Christ’s suffering, crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension. With solemn, emotional depth, it tells the story of sacrifice and redemption. The section concludes with the triumphant and world-famous “Hallelujah Chorus,” symbolizing the eternal reign of Christ.
Part 3: The Promise of Eternal Life
The final section of Messiah looks beyond Christ’s earthly ministry to the hope of resurrection and the victory over sin and death. Uplifting and filled with spiritual power, this part includes majestic arias like “I Know That My Redeemer Liveth” and “The Trumpet Shall Sound.”
While the Kinston/Lenoir Community Chorus has made Part 1 a seasonal tradition, we encourage our audience to explore and appreciate the richness of the entire oratorio. Handel’s Messiah is more than a holiday concert—it is a timeless musical journey through the heart of the Christian faith. This year’s performance is December 8th.
