Linda Rouse Sutton seeks re-election, highlights accomplishments and plans for Lenoir County

Linda Rouse Sutton, a familiar name in Lenoir County politics, is seeking re-election to the County Commissioners board, emphasizing her dedication to community service and a vision for continued progress. Raised on a family farm in Lenoir County, Sutton's upbringing instilled in her the values of giving back and perseverance, which have guided her throughout her career in public service.

Reflecting on her journey into politics, Sutton recounted her pivotal role in addressing the lack of air conditioning in schools, a challenge she tackled upon witnessing her daughter's discomfort in an overheated classroom.

"I thought I do not have the knowledge or social status to serve in this capacity. Of course, my parents’ encouragement of me from the time I was old enough to understand started popping up in my mind. I thought why not?" Sutton recalled.

Under her leadership, the County Commissioners board embarked on a strategic five-year plan focused on infrastructure and community development, with each annual budget aligned with the established goals.

"Infrastructure and community development are key concerns as well as essential to growth," Sutton emphasized. The plan emphasizes proactive measures such as upgrading infrastructure and collaborating with businesses and neighboring communities to attract investment.

Recognizing the importance of economic growth and job creation, Sutton highlighted partnerships between public schools, the community college, and regional collaboration as key strategies to attract and retain businesses.

"Realizing the potential we have with our military retirees as well as our military bases has made an enormous difference," she added.

Addressing the significance of agriculture in the county's economy, Sutton stressed the importance of sustainable practices and proactive measures to address environmental challenges.

"We should continue to tap into our great land grant universities to educate our farmers and our community," she affirmed.

Public safety remains a priority for Sutton, who emphasized the need for adequate funding and resources for law enforcement agencies.

"We as a board of commissioners know that the best thing that we can do is to support our law enforcement agencies through funding the best we can," Sutton stated.

On fiscal responsibility, Sutton outlined a pragmatic approach, emphasizing preventive maintenance and ensuring an adequate fund balance for emergencies.

"Primarily, our budget is based on doing the best thing we can for our facilities and our employees, providing the best services possible for our citizens," she explained.

As Sutton seeks another term, her focus remains on building upon past achievements and addressing the evolving needs of Lenoir County. With a track record of leadership and a commitment to community welfare, Sutton presents herself as a candidate with a clear vision for the county's future.

“I am running again because I am so proud of what we, as a team, have accomplished,” said Sutton. “The most exciting part is that the best is yet to come and I want to see us accomplish bigger and better opportunities for our children and grandchildren. It has been a very humbling experience and my pleasure and honor to serve all the citizens of this great county.”

In-person early voting started on February 15, 2024 and will end on Primary Election Day, March 5, 2024. There are two At-Large seats for the Lenoir County Commissioners race. Democrats Feletia Smith Lipford and Sammy Aiken will face Linda Rouse Sutton in the Democrat Primary. The top two vote getters will face Republican Keith King in the general election in November.
