Obituary: David Lee Mooring

David Lee Mooring, 66, of Kinston passed away on Friday, March 31, 2023 at UNC Lenoir Health Care.

David was an Agriculture Education Teacher and FFA Advisor for 34 years. He started his teaching career at Clyde A. Erwin High School in Asheville from 1980-1982. Then he had the opportunity to return home to teach at North Lenoir High School from 1982-2012 and 2016-2017.

Lifelong Educator 

  • National Vocational Agriculture Teachers Outstanding Young Member Award 1986

  • North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE) District 14 President (1993-1994) and Board of Director’s – numerous years

  • North Carolina FFA Agriscience Teacher of the Year 1994

  • National FFA Alumni Lifetime Member of North Lenoir

  • Trained countless number of FFA Teams including Ag Mechanics Tractor Driving Parliamentary Procedure Hunter Safety

  • Worked with state and national winning proficiency awards

  • Previous North Lenoir High School teacher of the year

David was a longtime mentor and Master Scout for Boy Scout Troop 555 in Kinston. He was a recipient of several Mentor Badges and awards. David helped numerous boy scouts through the years receive their Merit Badges and Eagle Scout achievements.  

  • A faithful volunteer for the following the organizations:

  • Community Council for the Arts

  • Kinston-Lenoir County Chamber of Commerce

  • Downtown Kinston Revitalization

Always available to the community in any capacity, especially helping those businesses and citizens affected by the floods in Hurricane Florence and Hurricane Matthew.

As busy as David was with his volunteering, teaching, and committees, he always made time for his family and friends.

Left to cherish his memory is his long-time companion, Linda Moody Mooring; sons, Mathew Lee Mooring and wife Kelly of Hugo, Daniel Ray Mooring and wife Paige of Kinston; grandchildren, Abel Lee Mooring, Jackson Roger Mooring, and Jett Lee Mooring, and Elizabeth Glynn Mooring; brothers, Donald Mooring and wife Gina of Kinston and John Hancock of Seven Springs; niece, Brook Nethercutt and husband Nick of Kinston; and nephew Landon Mooring of Kinston.

David also leaves behind his right hand man, his Beagle, Dallas.

David is preceded in death by his mother, Doris Bogey Hancock; and grandparents, Howard and Virginia Bogey.

Funeral will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 6, 2023 at North Lenoir High School Auditorium with Bishop Jeff Howard officiating. Visitation will follow the funeral. Graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 7, 2023 at Westview Cemetery.
